For the longest time, Chandigarh’s South Indian food scene has been dominated by franchise chains like Sagar Ratna and Sundarams. While their food offered hints of South Indian flavours, the restaurant ambiance lacked authenticity. Recently, a new South Indian restaurant, Malleshwaram Chandigarh, has opened its doors in Sector 7, shaking things up!
P & I, both huge fans of South Indian cuisine, were thrilled and couldn’t wait to try it out. We had an impeccable experience, and I’m eager to share it with you! Let’s dive in!
Malleshwaram Chandigarh: A South-Indian Odyssey With Delicious Flavours
P & I always are up for some good South Indian treats. We love our dosas, uttapams and idlis with a side of sambhar, coconut chutney and Filter Coffee. And so, the first chance we got, we headed to Malleshwaram Chandigarh in Sector 7. While initially I had read reviews on Google and was dejected, I decided that I’m going to try it myself to understand if they were true or just a case of sour grapes. So, one fine evening, after my office hours, P picked me up and we drove straight to Malleshwaram Chandigarh. It was around 7 PM on a weekday and to our surprise, we immediately got a place for 3.
Wait a minute! I forgot to tell you how pleasantly we were greeted by the staff at the door and they helped us find a perfect place to settle. We grabbed a spot right in the heart of the restaurant and began feasting our eyes on the aesthetically looking South-Indian restaurant in Chandigarh. Let me tell you more about it below!
Malleshwaram Chandigarh: Experience of Dining in a Traditional Carnatic Setting
Designed beautifully, Malleshwaram Chandigarh pays homage to traditional South-Indian homes centred around a courtyard. This South-Indian restaurant in Chandigarh elevates that concept to a whole new level. We grabbed seats in a central area amidst four wooden pillars and an inverted roof. A small stage surrounded a small lotus flower pond, creating a serene atmosphere.
The walls, adorned with beautiful gold brass artefacts, exuded an old-world charm. Smartly interspersed green plants throughout the restaurant further enhanced the feeling of calmness. P & I were enthralled by this aesthetically pleasing eatery in Chandigarh, finally a beautifully designed South-Indian restaurant in the city. While engrossed in admiring the ambience, our servers brought water and menus. We quickly glanced through it and picked what we wanted to relish. More about it in our next section!
Malleshwaram Chandigarh: A Speciality South-Indian Kitchen Serving A Flavourful Feast
Most of us assume a specialty restaurant’s menu might be confusing. But Malleshwaram Chandigarh defies that expectation. Their carefully curated menu features a variety of well-known South Indian dishes, making it easy to navigate. P & I loved the menu’s simplicity – everything was clearly described. Plus, the friendly servers were happy to answer any questions and help you choose the perfect dish.

After browsing the menu, we ordered Coin Idli Masala Fry, Veggie Loaded Uthapam, Mysore Masala Dosa, and their signature Malleshwaram Special Gandhara Guddi Dosa. To complete the experience, we added a pot of authentic filter coffee. We were informed of a 15-20 minute wait, which seemed like a perfect opportunity to capture some photos of the beautiful ambiance. However, by then, the restaurant had filled up, and every corner was occupied by fellow foodies eagerly awaiting their South Indian delights. Deciding against further photography, we settled in, eagerly awaiting our feast.
A Delightful South-Indian Culinary Journey
The first to arrive, and disappear just as quickly, was the Coin Idli Masala Fry. It was pure deliciousness. The aroma of the freshly poured tadka, with its fragrant curry leaves and a symphony of spices, transported us to a cosy South-Indian home. Following closely were the Uthapam and Dosas, accompanied by piping hot sambhar and a trio of delectable chutneys. The aroma of freshly made dosas and spicy Sambhar was irresistible, and we eagerly dug in.
The Malleshwaram Special Gandhara Guddi Dosa was a revelation. Unlike any dosa I’d ever had, it was fresh, bursting with flavour, perfectly crispy, and redolent with the warmth of South Indian spices and ghee. The Mysore Masala Dosa was also packed with delicious flavours and we totally loved it.
The sambhar was a delightful surprise – incredibly flavourful and mouthwatering. The chutneys were equally impressive, exploding with vibrant flavours that tantalise our taste buds from the first bite.
The Uthapam, with its subtle flavours, celebrated the essence of South Indian cuisine in a harmonious way. Amidst the familiar sights and sounds of North India, that evening offered a delightful surprise. We feasted on a South Indian meal, served in a truly Carnatic setting. The explosion of flavors and the unique presentation transported us far south, a delicious escape for the senses.
The Perfect Finale
Finally, the filter coffee arrived, the perfect way to end our culinary journey. Brewed to perfection, it was smooth and wonderfully balanced in taste. Malleshwaram’s food stands out from other South Indian restaurants in the city – it’s truly exceptional and deserves all the praise it gets.
Prinkled’s Parting Thoughts
Malleshwaram Chandigarh undoubtedly deserves all the love for its design, concept, and most importantly, its authentic flavours. Yes, the wait time can be long, but in our opinion, it’s absolutely worth it. Our suggestion: try visiting during off-peak hours, like we did, to minimise your wait time. Honestly, I’m thrilled that Chandigarh finally has an authentic South Indian restaurant to satisfy all my cravings.
