We’re back after a long hiatus, and this time, with a review of Dunki. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Anil Grover, Vikram Kochhar, and Boman Irani, Dunki is directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The duration of the film is 2 hours 42 minutes. It is packed with romance, action, comedy, and lots of emotions. P and I managed to grab an evening show at Elante Mall, Chandigarh, and here is what we felt after watching Dunki.
Dunki Review: Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal Take Us On An Emotional Ride
In a year of so many action-packed movies, which I thoroughly enjoyed, Dunki came like a breath of fresh air and a lot of nostalgia. Nostalgia of emotions, where we understand friendship, love, passion, and most of all, the feeling of coming right back home. Home means so many things to so many people.

For some, it’s a building, for others, it’s a person. But at the end of the day, it is these emotions that make us human and different from inanimate objects. Dunki is Rajkumar Hirani’s effort to remind us of all those emotions, which most of us, sorry to say, don’t want to feel. While his characters may appear over the top, borderline cringey at some points, the emotions he infuses in the story hit straight home and heart.
Filled with humour, happiness, and longing for a better life, Dunki is a decent effort. Comic scenes are extremely funny in the first half. In the second half, emotions take over. Another thing that I loved about the film is the fact that Rajkumar Hirani gave every actor that one scene where he or she can truly perform as an artist. Without revealing much, Anil Grover, Vicky Kaushal, and Shah Rukh Khan get the major chunk of the performance-oriented scenes. And, well they truly nail it. In romantically emotional scenes, no one can beat Shah Rukh Khan, especially in the second half.

But then, I need to mention here that Dunki isn’t just Shah Rukh Khan’s film. It is equally Taapsee Pannu’s, Anil Grover’s, Vikram Kochhar’s, Boman Irani’s, and of course, Vicky Kaushal’s. Each of these ‘namoonas’ manages to make you laugh, cry, cringe, furious, happy, and most of all, they remind you of the true meaning of homecoming. While there are flaws in the screenplay, I still enjoyed every bit of it. The music is also extremely good. Pritam has done an excellent job with the compositions. The lyrics add every bit of feels and voices of Arijit Singh, Diljit Dosanjh and Sonu Nigam tug at your heartstrings.
While the cringe accent of SRK bothered me, then, as they say, dil ka dimag thodi na hota hai. Agar Hardy aise baat karta hai toh karta hai na… Mannu aise over the top hai toh hai… Balli thoda funny dikhta hai toh dikhta hai… buggi thoda stupid hai toh hai…aur Sukhi thoda emotional hai toh hai.
Honestly, for me, Dunki is a perfect warm hug to kiss a very hard, action-packed, and tough year goodbye. Just when everyone is all set to bid 2023 goodbye, Rajkumar Hirani comes right in with his maiden outing with Shah Rukh Khan and makes us all emotional. Trust me, those who have heard stories of old Punjab times when everyone was obsessed with heading abroad, will truly love the film.
I hope whoever goes to watch this movie after reading this review feels the same, or at least a fraction of it. Happy viewing!
