Happy Friendship Day: A Heartfelt Ode To My Girls

Friendship Day is here again. And, as much as I try to celebrate it now, it’s not the same without physically having my girls with me. Like many of you, I too was privileged enough to find my tribe when I least expected it, 2 decades ago to be precise. Just thinking about it reminds me of this dialogue from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, “Yaadein mithai ke dibbe ki tarah hoti hain…Ek baar khula, toh sirf ek tukda nahi kha paoge”. And trust me, the tsunami of memories that hit me when I sat down to pen this Friendship Day ode, was overwhelming.

So, today, even though my girls are in different cities and we’re geographically separated, I want to celebrate this beautiful bond we’ve had since our school days!

Without further ado, here’s my ode to my girls S, N and R on Friendship Day!

Friendship Day Ode: Memories, Love & More

A journey that began from a ‘hello’
Didn’t know will be with me
Through life’s highs and lows.

In a school full of strangers,
A group of girls who broke the ice
What followed was a friendship,
all things fun and nice.

These girls accepted me completely
Filling my heart with glee
For I had found a tribe of my own
A group of humans, who became my home.

What began thereon was a journey so beautiful
Filled with laughter, chitter-chatter & shenanigans so fruitful.
Late night phone calls over landline,
Bonding and whining, our tradition so fine.

Sleepovers, Day Spends, Study Sessions Galore
We were thick as thieves, needing nothing more.
School life ended, college began
Yet nothing could break our sacred clan.

My girls became my pillars of strength,
I too stood by them, no matter where they went.
What held us together was nothing but love
A feeling so strong, I thank the heavens above.

Two decades ago, these girls were the family I chose,
And since then, they’ve always remained close.
Work and families may have separated us physically,
But our bond kept us together in our minds, daily.

This Friendship Day, I wish my girls the best,
For they’ve had my back,
No matter how hard was life’s test!
