As a fan of typical Bollywood filmy type films, I enjoy everything that is a complete package. From the hero making a smashing entry, Heroine’s gorgeous looks to them romancing in the Swiss Alps, everything about a romcom fills me up with joy. So naturally when I saw the trailer of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, I was excited. Wonder why? Coz after ages, Bollywood was all set to serve up a decent looking romcom with two of the most good looking actors, Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. On top of it all, the comic punch by Anubhav Singh Bassi was certainly something that I was looking forward to.
Without much ado, I booked our tickets to watch Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar in the first weekend itself. It was a typical Prinkle movie date with popcorn, coke and nachos and well, I had no complaints. As the film kicked off, I couldn’t help but get all the feels director Luv Ranjan wanted me to feel as an audience. And, now that the film has finally hit Netflix, let me give you a lowdown of the 5 feelings that I left with after watching Shraddha and Ranbir’s debut stint!
Gimme the Rich, Handsome Ranbir Kapoor On Screen Anyday!
Let’s just accept it. We RK fans were tired of seeing him in serious roles. Last I enjoyed his performance in a romcom was Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. While in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Ranbir was part fun, part serious, Sanju was quite a performance driven but heavy act. In the past year, Shamshera and Brahmastra again were very heavy, dramatic and frankly not so urbane. What all RK fans wanted to see was the fun, good-looking, playful guy they had always loved and found comfort in.

Well, all that wait finally came to an end when he made his smashing entry in TJMM. As Rohan Arora aka Mickey, he nailed the looks of a Gurugram-based businessman with a playful charm. Aah! Finally, a sigh of relief for all RK fans to see him dance it out on Maine Pee Rakhi Hai, Tere Pyaar Mein, Thumka and Pyaar Hota Kayi Baar Hai and what a sight to sore eyes! Frankly, it’s the side of RK we all love and we wouldn’t want him to stop playing such characters from time to time. RK, keep em coming!
More Of Anubhav Singh Bassi ‘s Comedy, Pleaseeeee!!!!
Bollywood often falls prey to cliches when it comes to choosing the supporting actor to the hero who is often also burdened with being funny. And most of the time, such actors fail in getting the job done. But, to put an end to this, Luv Ranjan introduced Anubhav Singh Bassi, a standup comedian with an akhad attitude, as Manu, RK’s best friend in TJMM. And, frankly, the search for a new actor with great comic timing finally came to an end. Bassi as Manu leaves you laughing with his savage one liners like ‘mujhe udeshya nahi dikh Raha tere jeevan ka’ and delivers Luv Ranjan ‘s signature hilarious monologues with such an amazing ease. Honestly, one wouldn’t have enjoyed Mickey’s playfulness had Manu not been his buddy.

Besides, Bassi really upped the ante with his looks for TJMM and looked just as handsome as RK. His camaraderie with RK is truly a highlight just like Jai and Veeru! I hope he gets to do more of these roles. Hello Bollywood Filmmakers, are you listening?
Shraddha Kapoor Nailing Every Urban Girl’s Dilemma. Give Us More Roles Like These!
Shraddha Kapoor as Tinni, the complicated working girl with family baggage in search of love, comes as a touch of relatable reality for many of us urban women. She captures the ‘not-so-serious’ attitude towards relationships in the beginning perfectly, and switches to the sensitive girl in love with ease when Mickey tugs at her heart. However, what Shraddha nails to the T is the dilemma every independent girl might be going through when she decides to settle down with a man who is totally in love with his family. Her vulnerability shines through in moments when she realises that she will never have Mickey to herself completely as his family dotes on him and he too cannot live without them. In those moments, we see Shraddha’s performance peak and most of the girls relating to her dilemma about going ahead with marrying the guy or not. While I’ve seen a narrative on social media where many vilified Tinni’s character for being selfish, what most people don’t see is that family baggage and past trauma at times makes you take decisions in order to protect yourself as well as others you care about. And honestly, it doesn’t relate to being a working professional, it stems from one’s inner being and the atmosphere one has grown up in. A huge shoutout to Shraddha for killing it as Tinni and capturing her vulnerability!
Oh Dimple Kapadia, Where Were You All These Years! DON’T STOP WORKING!
In this new wave of OTT and urbane cinema, there is so much scope for brilliant senior actors to return to the limelight like a boss. And when you see such actors braving it all and delivering a stunning performance, it fills one with a sense of pride. That is what I felt about Dimple Kapadia. Over the years, having seen her in small parts in Hollywood films like Tenet and more, I always wished that we’d get to witness more of her magic and charisma on the Big screen. And well, Luv Ranjan answered all our prayers. In TJMM, as Mickey’s loving yet typical savage Punjabi mom, Dimple Kapadia manages to leave you in awe. She is sassy, savage, gorgeous and loving in the right proportions and completely steals the show from all the others when she’s in the frame. The way she welcomes her would-be-daughter-in-law in the family is just too sweet. How she begins to involve her in the family decisions and showers her with love is almost unbelievable but something we all hope for, deep down. But, it’s the climax that really shows you why a star like Dimple Kapadia should be given more screen time in films. She kills it as Mickey’s sensitive, loving mom in those scenes and leaves you teary-eyed! Can we have more screentime for Dimple Kapadia please?
Why Loving Your Family Means You Can’t Love Your Partner Equally? Can Society Get Over Certain Clichés?
If you’ve been a fan of Bollywood films, you know that family love is everything for them. Most of us have grown up watching Sooraj Barjatya’s films where family is everything. And to be honest, family is honestly the biggest support system we all have. But, does loving your family truly and deeply mean that you can’t love your spouse equally deeply? Well, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar tackles this question in the second half quite in a ‘in your face’ kind of way. Some of the clichés popular in society are that if a guy is devoted to his family and vice versa, he won’t give the same amount of attention and love to his spouse. Another side of this is that if the spouse feels that it would do their marriage good if they stay separate or on different floors then she is trying to break a family. Honestly, both of these scenarios aren’t true. Love is a feeling that multiplies when shared with everyone. So when a guy is devoted to his family and vice versa, one can be assured that when a new member enters their world, love will not only be enough but in abundance. And, with it, attention will also be plenty. Everyone will get their bit of attention and love in such a scenario. That being said, there are many cases that lead to increased belief in clichés. But, why do we need to carry the burden of those clichés when starting off a new relationship? Can’t we walk into it with a clean slate and give it a chance?
On the other hand, if one of the spouses feels that they need space from family, the family members also need to be understanding that at times, holding someone too close may lead to suffocating relationships, which can turn sour. Instead of giving rise to this feeling, isn’t it better to give it a chance? Why not let the new couple figure it out on their own and if they can’t, at least they’ll know that their family truly loves them and they can always come back home. This comfort is what a family can provide and no one else. And that, in totality, is what TJMM tries to capture in its true essence. Well, at least it sparks a conversation worth having and leaves you with food for thought. Aren’t movies supposed to do that?
For Prinkle, the film was a complete package and we thoroughly enjoyed it. But, we’d love to know your thoughts over it in the comments! Go ahead and scribble some positivity!
